Anti Fascist Pro- Creative See Y’ In There

Killing Joke.

Out of the ashes of punk came a band who I still go see to this day and who are playing Nottingham tomorrow night, i may get the train, and who are still relevent and releasing new material even now, Killing joke, I could tell you about all their albums but will just concentrate on the debut album for now!

I used to go watch them around 79/80 and im pretty sure my mates band southern death cult supported them at one point but its all a hazy memory!

starting with the opener requiem this album is a true classic

followed by Wardance

This was punk but taking a different turn to the other bands at the time, when you look back on it was it the start of industrial, was it post punk(what is post punk?)I don’t know but they were making the kind of noise I liked, live they were truly mental and still are, saw them in Sheffield a few years ago was deaf for a week!

Jaz Coleman a great front man who is mental live, youth on bass(did he remix a madonna track) Geordie on guitar and paul Ferguson on drums

this band make a hell of a racket live go see them they are not just trading on past glories and buy this album too! your collection needs it!

Now who fancys going to nottingham tomorrow night?

Footnote: this blog is moving very soon to a different place hope my readers will follow me there!

Spandau Ballet. More Shame!

Ok i think this is the one that is going to cause gasps of horror! but when Journeys to glory was released it was looked upon as ” fresh, bold, and even somewhat avant-garde”

It was 1981 punk was dead as a doornail and as then as now The Nme were hyping this band  a particular band then it was  spandau ballet! well anyway the first single from the album was to cut a long story short a single which even today sounds great to these old ears of mine. The album has dated badly to me ,im just playing it again now but i love this single

The other 2 tracks on the album which still sound great are the other singles musclebound and the freeze,

Spandau ballet eventually wrote true which is aan abomimation to music, but once at the start of their career they were cutting edge!

in fact Gary kemp recorded with mick jones out of the clash about 3 years ago and very good it is too. called the meaning of life track it down!

He who is without sin cast the first stone please!

The Waterboys-This Is The Sea

I think when you’re in love there are always certain albums/songs that stay with you forever, and The Waterboys-This Is The Sea is one such album.

The album first came to my attention via the whole of the moon ,hearing it on the radio,in 1985 was great , before it had been played to death as it has been now ,made me go out and buy this album

Starting with Dont bang the drum this album is just fantastic and as I play it now it moves me back 26 years to a certain girl who lets just say I may still be carrying a torch for!

Next up is the whole of the moon which moves into spirit

and followed  by  the pan within it sends shivers down my spine, evocative memories of driving up and down to Leicester to see the girl with this album on a loop for months in the cassette player ,and the girl driving me down to london so I could see west ham!

and that was just side one!

Stand out tracks on side 2 are trumpets

a beautiful love song

“and to be with you is to find my self in the best of dreams”

and then finally the title track this is the sea!

These things you keep
you better throw them away
you want to turn your back
on your souless days
once you were tethered
now you are free
once you were tethered
now you are free
that was the river
this is the sea

now if you are feeling weary
if you’ve been alone too long
or maybe you been suffering from
a few too many plans that have gone wrong
and you’re tryin’ to remember
how fine your life used to be
running around banging your drum
like it’s ninteeen seventy three
well that was the river
this is the sea

now you say you got trouble
you say you got pain
you say you got nothin’ left to believe in
nothin’ to hold on to
nothin’ to trust
nothin’ but chains
you’ve been scouring your conscience
raking through your memory
scouring your conscience
raking through your memory
that was the river
this is the sea

now i can see you’re waverin’
as you try to decide
you’ve got a war in your head
and it’s tearing you up inside
you’re tryin’ to make sense
of something that you just don’t see
tryin’ to make sense now
and you know that you once held the key
but that was the river
and this is the sea

now here is a train
it’s comin’ on down the line
you realise if you hurry
you got still enough time
and you don’t need no tiket
and you dont pay no fee
and you don’t need no ticket
and you dont pay no fee
because that was the river
and this is the sea
that was the river
this is the sea
that was the river
this is the sea
the river, the river, the river, the river
the river, the river, the river
and this is the sea

sea mmmmmm sea
Behold The Sea

I still listen to this album a lot usually in the dark on the headphones, it brings it all back to me of being youngish and in love, happy times.

im not a good enough writer to explain how this whole album makes me feel about this girl but lets just say if i could turn the clock back to those times and right some wrongs i would do it like a shot! Youth is wasted on the young.

after this the waterboys went more irish and released fisherman blues which has its moments but this album is a band at their peak without a doubt, you really need to get this album or at least give it a listen and not on shuffle either!

Gang Of Four-Damaged Goods. Punk Classic!

Another Leeds band seen these a few times i can even remember seeing them !

Best single for me! It still sounds fantastic now!

Damaged goods
Send them back
I can’t work
I can’t achieve
Send me back
Open the till
Give me the change
You said would do me good
Refund the cost
You said you’re cheap but you’re too much
Your kiss so sweet
Your sweat so sour
Sometimes I’m thinking that I love you
But I know it’s only lust
The change will do you good
I always knew it would
You know the change will do you good
You know the change will do you good
