The Waterboys-This Is The Sea

I think when you’re in love there are always certain albums/songs that stay with you forever, and The Waterboys-This Is The Sea is one such album.

The album first came to my attention via the whole of the moon ,hearing it on the radio,in 1985 was great , before it had been played to death as it has been now ,made me go out and buy this album

Starting with Dont bang the drum this album is just fantastic and as I play it now it moves me back 26 years to a certain girl who lets just say I may still be carrying a torch for!

Next up is the whole of the moon which moves into spirit

and followed  by  the pan within it sends shivers down my spine, evocative memories of driving up and down to Leicester to see the girl with this album on a loop for months in the cassette player ,and the girl driving me down to london so I could see west ham!

and that was just side one!

Stand out tracks on side 2 are trumpets

a beautiful love song

“and to be with you is to find my self in the best of dreams”

and then finally the title track this is the sea!

These things you keep
you better throw them away
you want to turn your back
on your souless days
once you were tethered
now you are free
once you were tethered
now you are free
that was the river
this is the sea

now if you are feeling weary
if you’ve been alone too long
or maybe you been suffering from
a few too many plans that have gone wrong
and you’re tryin’ to remember
how fine your life used to be
running around banging your drum
like it’s ninteeen seventy three
well that was the river
this is the sea

now you say you got trouble
you say you got pain
you say you got nothin’ left to believe in
nothin’ to hold on to
nothin’ to trust
nothin’ but chains
you’ve been scouring your conscience
raking through your memory
scouring your conscience
raking through your memory
that was the river
this is the sea

now i can see you’re waverin’
as you try to decide
you’ve got a war in your head
and it’s tearing you up inside
you’re tryin’ to make sense
of something that you just don’t see
tryin’ to make sense now
and you know that you once held the key
but that was the river
and this is the sea

now here is a train
it’s comin’ on down the line
you realise if you hurry
you got still enough time
and you don’t need no tiket
and you dont pay no fee
and you don’t need no ticket
and you dont pay no fee
because that was the river
and this is the sea
that was the river
this is the sea
that was the river
this is the sea
the river, the river, the river, the river
the river, the river, the river
and this is the sea

sea mmmmmm sea
Behold The Sea

I still listen to this album a lot usually in the dark on the headphones, it brings it all back to me of being youngish and in love, happy times.

im not a good enough writer to explain how this whole album makes me feel about this girl but lets just say if i could turn the clock back to those times and right some wrongs i would do it like a shot! Youth is wasted on the young.

after this the waterboys went more irish and released fisherman blues which has its moments but this album is a band at their peak without a doubt, you really need to get this album or at least give it a listen and not on shuffle either!

Stoke V West Ham 12/03/11

Well there has been a lot written about this stoke side but im going to add my thoughts to the debate too!

Was it football we were watching yesterday, rugby or even american football with a bit of all in wrestling in it! To me it was the latter, as a kid I grew up watching british wrestling big daddy, giant haystacks,Mick mcmanus and my friends dad baby face jim breaks, they used to have tag team fights and the baddies would always bully the goodies by not really playing to the rules or just bending them enough.

To me this is how Stoke city operate lumping it up one guy actually going for the ball as the rest of the team block fight and grapple ala american football and all in wrestling, taking out opponents any which way none of it legally!

typical stoke player

How do they get away with it week after week? how was that not a penalty when de costa was wrestled to the ground? I have been a passive fan for years now but god was I shouting at the telly and swearing on twitter yesterday!

de costa goes down in the stoke penalty area!

And Pulis complaining about the hand ball for the first goal, people in glass houses etc etc. The referee was poor too he wanted to give stoke everything as he had allowed west hams goal, but the Wembley dream has gone now to be honest im pleased as we need to concentrate on stopping up!

I will thank stoke for one thing though im coming out of a self enforced retirement and going to start going to some away games, I was so incensed by the way they play that I want to shout and abuse such play live! I also want to take my place amongst the best supporters in the world the West Ham ones see you at Bolton!

Cockney Rejects-Harder Then The Rest.

Any band who calls their first album greatest hits vol 1 have got a lot of balls and this band had them! Ladies and gentlemen I give you the Cockney Rejects!

I first came across the rejects on yes you’ve guessed it the John Peel show when he played their single flares and slippers! Where would people of my age be without john peel?

produced by jimmy pursey and championed by Garry bushall the rejects were maybe the first oi band!

When I realised they were also west ham fans well that was good enough for me, on bass was known west ham icf hooligan Vince Riordan who had actually appeared on the notorious itv hooligan documentary with other members of the icf.

I first saw the rejects at The famed Royal Standard in Bradford i could not belive how young they were, and what a great group they also were, by then punk had changed and was becoming less arty and more working class with bands like sham the uk subs and the cockney rejects taking over.

The oi movement which was a white skinhead working class movement nearly destroyed the rejects trouble seemed to follow them wherever they went because of the west ham connection, which to be honest they played up to at the start, stinky turner would often be offering people out at gigs!

It was amazing to see the Rejects on TOTP and they even released im forever blowing bubbles in honour of West ham getting to the 1980 cup final against Arsenal, west ham then in the 2nd division beat Arsenal 1-0 thanks to a goal from Trevor Brooking (god)! I was actually at wembley for this game!

Their 2nd album called Greatest Hits Volume 2 what else! is a minor classic it has war on the terraces,oi oi oi,the rocker, greatest cockney rip off amongst other great tracks!

A friend of mine promoted the rejects around this time and I ended up roadieing for them that night! I dropped the Guitarists Micky Geggus speaker! if looks could kill!

The Leeds service crew turned up to this gig and at one point I thought it was going to explode but the gig passed off peacefully!

After greatest hit vol 3 and the power and the glory the  band took off to be a more serious heavy rock band, with some success.

Still touring to this day and one of mine and morriseys favourite bands, when he curated the meltdown festival he booked the cockney rejects to play the royal Festival hall, bloody fantastic!

your download today is the gig in Bradford I actually roadied at hear the tension as the plugs are pulled at the start and you think there’s going to be a riot!
